JIMI HENDRIX Feature Film Hits A Wall
December 20, 2010According to The Pulse Of Radio, an in-the-works Jimi Hendrix biopic has hit a major road-block. The flick was already in the planning phase with Legendary Pictures and Oscar-nominated director Paul Greengrass on board. Actor Anthony Mackie of "The Hurt Locker" was reportedly in talks to star as the late singer-guitarist.
But according to Deadline.com, Experience Hendrix, the estate that controls Hendrix's song rights, refuses to give the go-ahead for the feature film. Experience Hendrix CEO Janie Hendrix said, "Legendary proceeded without our permission, direction or involvement. It didn't 'fall apart,' it never was. When we do the Jimi Hendrix feature film bio, we will be involved and in control from the beginning."
Producer Bill Gerber shot back saying, "To say we proceeded without permission isn't fair. Thomas Tull couldn't have been more generous and eager to collaborate with the estate. He was ready go finance their version of Jimi's story, he got a script that made The Black List [Hollywood's annual annointment of the best unproduced screenplays] and brought Paul Greengrass to the party. It boggles the mind."
Although an Experience Hendrix rep denies it, insiders say the estate opposes the movie because it fears a new film and soundtrack could potentially hurt sales of the Hendrix's back catalogue — similar to what happened with Oliver Stone's movie, "The Doors".
